Here we have another the good Mental Health worker who fails to state that "ADHD" is THE fundamental mental health disorder affecting Humanity. Why isn't the connection made that all forms of human suffering from domestic abuse to high school dropouts and most violent crime are the direct result of this disorder. Where is the understanding that it isn't the most basic parts of the disorder that cause the most damage, talk about the "temporal discounting", talk about the resistance to mental work and effort, talk about abnormal capture of attention, discuss the "Dyslogic" from poor judgement and a inability to prioritize possible actions, what about the emotional dysregulation that causes isolation as these children with ADHD grow up , what about the fact Omar Mateen (Orlando Shooter) and most mass shooters have ADHD, what about the problems in thinking that arise from the damaged brains (ADHD is Brain Damage, lets state that please!!!)Lets talk about president George W bush's brain which works so dyslogically that he cant understand the future consequences to his present actions....that's what ADHD and poor Executive Functioning is (the inability to understand and appreciate consequences; that's why you punch your wife not realizing she will go away forever) its not Hyperactivity, not Inattention, that's not why I'm addicted to drugs, you ignoramus, its because my damaged dopamine system defaults to working on satisfying the next "Instant". Please have him understand that psychotherapy only improves symptoms 3% over and above the 70% symptom relief that you get form just the medications. When he makes statements like we need a combined approach, with both medication and psychotherapy, that is complete and utter NONSENSE! Truth be told no one ever has done a long term study on the effectiveness of amphetamines...they just don't work in the long term because of tolerance....the makers of the drug only report trials for 8-12 weeks then they hide the results of long term data points. I wonder why? Also you guys forget to mention the drug "Intuniv", I am a violent offender, and quite simply this drug is resplendent, it allows me to "Keep Things in Mind". My working memory and Prospective memory are improved , and the later allows me to understand hitting my fellow human beings in not the answer because the idea of the "Golden Rule" occurs to me , namely I should treat others the way I would want to be treated...this clarity , as my stratium connects "me" to the front of my brain (for the first time) and allows for thoughts of a more "social rule remembering" nature that allows me to refrain from the "fight" reflex that causes me to want to end you. A voice enters my head that can only be a new brain connectome; "How would you like it if you lived in a world where people just attacked other people for any cause, what kind of world would this Be?, how would you like to live is this world?" This kind of reflection (social rule remembering at the point of stress) is completely alien to me but I understand it is the result of new mental capacity, a psychical mental capacity that wasn't there before, no psychotherapy ever got human to this point, I can now actually think of the future for the first time in relation to myself and others that I inhabit the planet with! If you think about it, it's (Intuniv) a cure for "Impulsive Murder"...that is an amazing thing...please do a trial using INTUNIV and give this drug to convicts and inmates, they will tell you a voice appears that allows them to step away from a potential devastating incident ..it gives them mental breathing room, and the ability to "NOT REACT to EVERYTHING like it was Life and death", it also gives them a black board where for the first time an inner voice can speak to the rest of themselves and lets "reason enter the violent impulsive mind", this is absent from psychotherapy (CBT), as I cant inhibit enough to have the mental breathing room to remember the skills I've been taught, this is why CBT fails every time (CBT only gives adds 3% success to just plain medications 70% symptom success rate), it only occurs to me after the violent incident takes place, the brain hijacking has already taken place by my fight reflex, and consequences have occurred that I and my victim cannot now escape. It has to be understood "Failure Takes Place at the Point of Performance", I cannot access my experiences or memories or learning and recall it in a useful way, when it matters. (as ADHD again should really correctly be understood as brain damage, not brain difference).
